ABOUT US

Great Protest Songs is a son and father team (Pete & Rob) with technical assistance from Thessa.

Founders of Great Protest Songs

Rob and Pete

Pete came home from school one day with a homework task to put up a video on YouTube. As he loves protest music he decided to make a music video of The Jam’s ‘Going Underground’. He carried on making videos – see ‘Rock the Casbah’ by The Clash’, ‘I won’t back down’ by Tom Petty and others on this site. This proved to be a perfect vehicle for teenage angst (father writing!) and for learning about the various struggles against oppression today and in modern history.

Rob had persuaded his tutor at college to allow him to write his English Literature degree thesis on the radical UK singer Billy Bragg so the idea came about to produce a site with information about all kinds of protest songs (a perfect vehicle for middle aged angst!). We hope you enjoy our site and please leave us your comments and suggestions. Oh and as a few people have asked, we produced this sit using a Premium WordPress theme. Rob–love your website. Thank you so much. Here is a link to a song I wrote and sange with Philly’s Dukes of Destiny back in the 90′s protesting Clinton’s abandonment of national health care and progressive welfare policies. A friend added visuals to link it to the Occupy Wall Street movement. I’d love comments, feel free to share it. Dave Kannerstein

It’s nice to see the growing interest in songs about our current times.

  5. ALICE CONNALLY FISK says:

    THE SECOND AMERICAN REVOLUTION
(Score: Battle Hymn of the Republic)

In Revolution No. 2, Big Business is The King

with power absolute through politicians on a string.

To their Empire, known as Congress, corporate lobbyists all bring

    Campaign donations huge…

Countless millions get the royal shaft from Industry so big –

minor wages, zero health care, part-time, temps, the downsize gig,

layoffs, furloughs — yet, a Congress jumping to the corporate jig.

    The fight for justice dawns…

Untold millions have NO health care nor a LIVING wage to boot.

Insolvent grow our working poor while the rich take ALL the loot.

When government’s don’t listen, insurrectionists recruit.

    The fight for justice moves…

March united, risen people as our rebels rose before.

Let corporate Kings, by peasant sweat, give royal shafts no more.

OFF our knees, empowered, dauntless, all oppressors hear us roar –

    We’ll Mobilize and WIN!

Chorus: Glory, glory, Alleluia! Glory, glory, Alleluia!

Glory, glory, Alleluia! Folks mobilized and WON!.

    Repeat Chorus

  6. Thanks for putting this website together – its something I’ve been wanting to do myself for ages.

You might be interested in the project I’m working on:

I’d appreciate any thoughts you might have on the idea and the music in particular.

    Kind regards,

  7. Hi Pete and Rob!

My name is Aisha O’Brien and I’m the online organizer for Progressive Majority in Washington DC. Our organization is dedicated to getting more progressives elected to state and local governments, as well as making those legislatures more representative of the American population.

Our organization and Grassrooting Productions are launching a grassroots project that will bring the next generation of protest songs that will inspire and give hope. And we want your readers to be a part of that!

The project is called The Nation Sings: http://thenationsings.com.

We are asking people to submit songs, poems, beats, videos, animation, graphics, and anything else to bring awareness to the recall elections. Once it’s posted on our website, other users can browse and select content that they’d like to build on (if you’re familiar with HitRECord.org it’s very similar). The result will be one big multimedia masterpiece created by hundreds of artists!

We have six members of our Farm Team running in these elections fighting to save workers rights and put the power back with the people.

We would love for you to help us promote this project by blogging about our efforts or putting a link on your homepage to our website. If we can get a bunch of readers to participate in this awesome project, we can really make a difference in raising awareness of these recall elections and the labor fights across the country.

    Let’s unite our voices!

    Best,

    Aisha

Steve Tilston has been around since the early 70s and his songs get better and better. I’ve found a couple of sites where movies have been made to fit with his lyrics- A Pretty Penny about the credit crunch and Nottamun Town Return a satire of the political set-up in the UK.

  9. Thought you might like this song titled “Rage & Misery” by Crying 4 Kafka. It was inspired by the revolutions in the middle east.

    Nice site!

I’ve written a few protests song, myself. Some have actually gotten me in trouble. My latest one is called “Don’t Get Hung Up”. It’s about this whole immigration mess and the Department of Homeland Security. Been waiting on the approval for my wife to come to the States for over 8 months. Very slow process. Endless paperwork and checks. I hope you’ll check out the song here:

If you page through my blog, I’ve another protest song called “Make Yourself A Vow” a protest about TSA.

Just passing along the info. All the best. Jim
